Angel’s Staircase MTB Ride – Methow Valley WA – August 13 2016

Like a spiral, moving ever further from its point of origin, any long-term Portland mountain biker will slowly but surely find themselves looking for trails further and further from home; you can only ride Hood River, Oakridge, and Bend so many times before you begin to crave a different vista, a bigger climb, a longer descent. In this spirit, I performed an internet search and learned about Angel’s Landing in far North Central Washington. I enlisted David and Dan, and waited patiently as the stars, meteors, and fork stanchions aligned and we hit the road on a Friday after work.

Making Shadows at the Silver Star Prison Break

With classic reggae spilling out of David’s newly-installed sound system, we drove past the packed parking lot of riders getting ready for the Silver Star Prison Break. We were running late and made it there 5 minutes before the start. Luckily, we pulled in right behind Sean (Corey) and Paul (Valentine), and we all quickly made plans to ride together. While we were still getting ready, the main group started riding and we were left playing catch-up/riding on our own terms. Lara and Marayah were also getting a late start and the six of us set off together. The roads were quiet and the air still had that familiar damp, morning chill which mixes perfectly with anticipation. Continue reading “Making Shadows at the Silver Star Prison Break”

Sometimes it's unclear what the joke actually is, but it's nice when most everyone seems in on it #dm60

SSCXWC Victoria Photos

A few members of the team drove some cars, then hopped on a ferry, and then arrived in beautiful Victoria, BC. The details from that point are hazy, but we know that there were singlespeeds, pampdrank, literal alley cats, exotic potato chips, snow barriers, and cheating (so much cheating). We’ll have a full write up later but here is the first batch of photos. There won’t be in official write up. Just knowing we were together and had a great time is enough.

36 Hours in Bend

I hope I didn’t talk too much this weekend about how pumped I am to be the newest member of the Ruckus Test Team. It’s been on my mind a lot since spending 36 hours in Bend getting to know the team, dressing up like a sexy dancer, and racing a couple of Cross Crusade races. Sitting here a few days later, I’m trying to sort out my memories and decide which was the most interesting part of the weekend.

PDX Trophy Cup final week; speedo race

Heading into the last Trophy Cup, David was in close contention for the win with Steven and Cliff. A few things needed to happen to get him to the top step, one of which was to employ the “speedo rule” where the rider would get double the points if they raced in a speedo. Unfortunately, the other part of the plan was to hope that the other fellas didn’t do the same. They did. It was a great race to watch and David ended up on the podium in second. Great job! Battle at Barlow 2015

Recovering from our respective hand injuries, Andrew and I went to watch the Barlow races. Shawn was the only one to make the long trek to Gresham to run up the famous rail ties.
Good job, Shawn!

Blind Date at the Dairy – Week 2

This past week I was given the go ahead to try to start riding. I’m comfortable on the hoods but any bump feels terrible. Still not ready to race cyclocross so that means more time taking photos.
This week at Blind Date, Brian defended his jersey, David got third at the end of a great battle with Beardsley, and Shawn got 2nd in his B race.

Great Deviations: The Ruckus Test Team rides the 2015 Oregon Stampede

Great Deviations

No longer benefitting from Donnie’s organization and the promotional backing of Velodirt et al, this year’s edition of the storied Oregon Stampede was a lightly-attended affair. You basically had to remember that it was happening and on which day. Lucky for us, four Ruckus Test Teammates did. We lined up alongside nine other men and women at 7 a.m. in the Deschutes State Recreation Area parking lot.

With no leader to tell us otherwise, we split down the middle in our opinions about which direction to go. Rather than come to a consensus, everyone agreed it would be more comical to ride in opposite directions and “high-five in the middle.”
